How to Decorate a Christmas Tree Professionally

Want a perfect Christmas tree?  Here's how to decorate your Christmas tree professionally.

Instructions

  1. 1
Decide on the overall designer color scheme of your Christmas tree. It could be all gold, red & gold & green, red & silver, pink & white - the options are endless. The color scheme should compliment the color scheme of the room it is going into. There are many non traditional ornament colors available, such as aqua, plum, olive green, and navy, that will give your tree an updated look.
  2. 2
Decide if your Christmas tree is going to have a theme. The theme could be angels, Disney characters, stars, nutcrackers, snowflakes, or anything you can dream up. Having a theme is optional.
  3. 3
Purchase Christmas ornaments, garland, florals, ribbons, feathers, and any other designer items that compliment your color scheme and theme, if you have a theme. Select ornaments and trims that are over sized. Christmas ornaments in a multi-pack work great because they are usually less expensive, however purchase different types of multi-packs so not all the ornaments look exactly alike. You can get multi-packs at hardware stores, craft stores, discount stores, and online. I would suggest 10 large Christmas ornaments per foot height of tree. Consider using natural elements on your tree such as pine cones, grape vine, or twigs. You can also use artificial natural elements such as Christmas ornaments shaped as birds or butterflies.
  4. 4
Once you have all your materials, you should put on your Christmas lights first before you decorate with ornaments. Make sure you put the lights on evenly, both towards the trunk of the Christmas tree and towards the outside of the tree. Use approximately 100 lights per foot of tree. If you have a 6' tree, you should use 600 lights (6 strands of 100 count lights).
  5. 5
After the lights are on and you have checked that they are working properly, it is time to decorate using the garlands, florals, ribbons, and any non-ornament that you have purchased. There are many ways to add garlands to your tree. You can add the garlands running from the top of the tree down, tucking the garland into the tree about every 2 foot going down. Another option is to run garlands in a circle around the outside of the tree. A third option is to run the garlands in a circle around the trunk of the tree.
  6. 6
Next, decorate your Christmas tree starting with a single multi-pack of ornaments (if you have purchased multi-packs) and attach those ornaments evenly over the tree. Move on to decorating with the next box, periodically stepping back and looking at your progress. Keep decorating with the ornaments evenly until you run out. I would suggest placing larger ornaments towards the bottom and inside of your tree and your smaller ornaments towards the top and outside of your tree.
  7. 7
Now it is time to decorate with your family ornaments. Whether it is a craft your child made in school or an ornament from your last vacation, a Christmas tree should be decorated with memories. Consider purchasing a new ornament each year for your tree that will remind you of something special. An popular option is to make your yearly ornament a small ornament photo frame with this year's photo with Santa.
  8. 8
Add a tree topper and tree skirt to finish off the tree decor. The Christmas tree topper could be a traditional star, angel, Santa, fancy designer bow, or anything else that will top off your tree.
  9. 9
For extra special designer flair, you can color coordinate your gift wrap to your tree. Use multiple colors, textures, and patterns of paper and ribbon for interest. Brown craft paper with fancy bows is always a designer favorite.

How to Get Rich Without College

Want to get rich without going to college? Here is how.

I accepted the fact after finishing high school that I was not college material. At first it depressed me because I knew that I would have to work my butt off in order to be somebody. But I am not a lazy person and I
was willing to do all it takes to live a normal life. That realization lifted my spirits and I went out looking for a job. My first job was on a farm as a tractor driver. I worked hard for two years in which I doubled my salary, but it still wasn't a living wage, so I headed for the big city where I was hired as a driver for a parcel delivery service. The job offered lots of overtime pay which I was happy to get. Half my pay was put into a mutual fund which was recommended to me by the financial department of the bank. Three years later I met my future wife. She was a beautiful woman who worked as a sales manager in a department store. We were approved for a mortgage on a new home and got ready to raise a family. Our son was born two years latter.

My wife was a practical and thrifty woman, so it was agreed that we would put twenty five percent of our salaries into the mutual fund that I had started a few years back, it would still leave us enough to enjoy our lives. Years later my son finished high school and searched for a good college to go to. He asked me for a loan of two hundred thousand dollars. That was the four year cost of the college he had chosen. Upon graduation he would need another hundred thousand dollars to get his masters degree. I sat him down and opened up the statement from my mutual fund. He gasped when he saw a million dollars. I told him they he could also be a rich man if he followed in his parents foot steps. I opened up a mutual fund for him and deposited the three hundred thousand dollars that he was going to spend on college. He was hired by the same company that I worked for and started work the next week.

He is now married and the owner of his own home. His wife works as a saleslady, and is also a practical and thrifty woman. They put away twenty five percent of their income in a mutual fund. They have a young son, who I am sure will never go to college.

How and Why To Use Google Voice

Google Voice is the next big thing in phone systems, but should you use it?

After weeks of anticipation, Google is finally accepting a limited number of new users into its Google Voice phone system. Google Voice allows you to unite all of your phones under a single number and then use a powerful set of controls to determine how calls are handled. It packs plenty of other impressive functionality, too, including voicemail-to-text transcribing and advanced call-screening.

(Check out PC World's review of Google Voice)

At the same time, though, adopting Google Voice as your communications commander introduces some potential negatives, ranging from privacy-related concerns to questions about reliability. Here's a breakdown of five pros and five cons to help you determine whether the service is right for you.

Google Voice: 5 Reasons to Use It

1. Routing power
Google Voice eliminates the problem of having multiple numbers for multiple purposes. Once you sign up and receive a phone number, you input all of your existing numbers--your cell phone, work phone, home phone, and anything else--into the control panel. Then, when you receive a call, all of your phones will ring (or a smaller subset, if you choose), and you can answer on whichever one is most convenient at the time.
The true power, though, comes with Google Voice's advanced routing options. You can set your preferences so that certain calls will ring only certain phones. If, for example, you wanted your spouse's calls to go straight through to your cell phone, or your mother's calls to ring only on your home phone, you could make those specifications. You could even set certain callers to be routed directly into your voicemail.

2. Screening power
Once a call comes through, you have a whole new set of options. When you pick up the call, and while the caller still hears ringing, you'll be presented with the person's name and four options: answer the call, send it to voicemail, send it to voicemail and listen in live, or answer and record the call.
Google Voice uses information from your address book to tell you who's calling. If the caller isn't in your contacts list, Google Voice can ask for their name and play it back for you when you pick up.

3. Voicemail power
As mentioned above, Google Voice's voicemail system allows you to listen in while someone is recording a message. If you decide to pick up midmessage, you simply press the star key and begin talking.
Google Voice voicemail transcriptionGoogle Voice's voicemail is fully accessible over the Web, too: You can listen to voicemail online, forward voice messages to other users, and even embed them on other Web sites. Google Voice also offers text transcriptions of your voice messages and the ability to receive them via e-mail or text message.

4. SMS power
SMS is fully integrated into Google Voice. If someone sends a message to your Google number, the service will route it to any mobile phones you have connected. You can reply to text messages from any phone as well, or via the Google Voice Web interface.
Google Voice can also store all of your text messages within its Web interface for permanent archiving. That means every text you've ever sent or received can be filed, searched, and kept forever--as if it were e-mail. Like Gmail, the Google Voice Web system displays back-and-forth messages as conversations to make following dialogues easier.

5. Midcall power
Google Voice gives you added power while you're in the middle of a call, too. You can start and stop recording calls with the touch of a single button, and then access those recordings online. You can also switch phones without having to interrupt the call: You simply press the star key while talking, and your other connected phones will begin to ring. At that point, you can pick any of them up, hang the original phone up, and go about your conversation as if nothing had happened.

How to Get Rich In College Out of Your Dorm Room

Getting rich in college isn't easy, unless you're Mark Zuckerberg.  But the free time you have as a college student and connections to other students are two significant steps in the right direction toward becoming rich in college.

How many hours do you waste each day on Facebook or playing videogames in your dorm room? Ever wished you could turn that time into cash? Well, making money from your dorm room isn't as difficult as you might think. To get you started, we've unveiled five simple money-making ideas. Although we're not promising that you will be able to drop out of college like Bill Gates, these ideas will certainly put more beer money in your pocket. They've worked for us, and they can work for you too.Blog for dollars

Starting a blog or a simple website can pay off big time. By placing advertisements from Google or Yahoo on your website, you can be paid every time someone clicks on one of those advertisements. With Google's Blogger.com, you can set up your own blog in a matter of minutes. Pick a topic you are passionate about and start writing. When you build a following of loyal readers, your blog will begin to throw off steady cash flow. Some of the most successful bloggers earn over six figures a year writing about what they love. You can too!
Be the hall barber

In general, college students are cheap, and they all need haircuts! Buy an inexpensive hair clipper and offer to buzz your friends' heads for $5 a pop. If you've got talent with barbers shears, add traditional cuts to your offerings and charge a little more. As long as you undercut your college barber and do a good job, your business will grow by word of mouth. Although you won't become a millionaire from cutting hair in the dorms, you'll certainly make some decent pocket change, and the risk is extremely low.Get paid to promote parties

Are you in the know about what's going down around your campus? Plenty of students are not, and they might actually pay you to let them know what's happening on the weekend. Here's how to do it: attend freshman orientation parties; identify those students at the party who don't appear to have many friends; tell them about your service and hand them a business card with your email address offering a free trial version; create a PayPal account and begin charging $10 dollars a semester for biweekly emails and text messages informing subscribers about the hottest parties around campus. If you gain enough of a subscriber base, you can begin charging campus organizations to promote their parties. Think Van Wilder.
Become an internet image consultant

Are you a pro at creating cool Myspace layouts? How about up to date on all the latest trends in Facebook applications? Believe it or not, your friends might actually pay you to manage their image on the web. When you think about how important social networking sites have become in the college lifestyle, it is easy to see why your technically challenged friends might be willing to pony up so that they can be part of the crowd.
Start an airport shuttle service

If you have a car on campus, starting an airport shuttle service can be one of the easiest ways to earn some serious cash. Do some research and find out the most popular times students at your college fly out of the closest airport. Create a schedule and promote your service on campus forums, such as rideshare programs. If your college doesn't have active internet forums, promote your service by placing flyers in the dorms. Posting flyers in communal bathrooms always works well. Make sure to charge a little less than competing shuttle services and business will boom!
The key to making money in college is initiative. With a little motivation and some hard work, you can turn your free time into cash in no time. While your friends are wasting all of their time on Facebook or playing video games, you'll be raking it in. Plus, with all of the money you'll be making, you'll have a lot more fun in your free time!

Get Rich Selling Pot--How the Legalization of Marijuana Will Affect Weed Economics

Get Rich Selling Pot

Ever wonder how someone can get rich selling weed?  Well, if marijuana is legalized, that may be a lot more difficult for the average person.

Can you imagine someone smoking weed at a gas station and watching a police officer not give them a ticket? Believe me, I saw someone smoking marijuana at a gas station, but there were no policemen around? On November 2, 2010 California residents will be voting on Proposition 19, which could legalize the possession and use of marijuana in California. There have already been other states that have legalized medical marijuana such as Alaska, Colorado, DC, Hawaii, Maine, Michigan, Montana, Nevada, New Jersey, New Mexico, Oregon, Rhode Island, Vermont, and Washington according to Procon.org. California would be the first state to make it legal for anyone over 21 to use marijuana as long as you're not driving while under the influence of weed. It is good for marijuana smokers and bad for people who don't smoke weed. Some argue that marijuana doesn't make people dumb, won't kill people, and is actually known to help cure people. However those are the people that enjoy smoking marijuana.

People who smoke marijuana can pass drug tests by taking a drink that flushes out the body system within 24 hours and the marijuana shouldn't show up in the system. So if people are getting away with smoking marijuana, why not legalize it in the first place? But isn't marijuana smoke causing non-smokers headache. Who wants to smell marijuana on someone?

Imagine a man who has a marijuana license and plans to get rich off selling marijuana to medical patients. He can have up to five patients and he can grow and sell marijuana inside his home. What if men start to have weed homes, over the city, and leave the homes vacant full of marijuana? Is that something residents of California have to look forward to? The cost of marijuana is going to rise however, if marijuana becomes legalized it will be taxed, and it could cause revenue for the city. There are actually some poor cities that could have their cities turned around from selling marijuana. Thus being a positive reason for approving Proposition 19. The problem arises when one illegal drug is legalized; will that lead to other illegal drugs being legalized?

How to Bid on eBay Intelligently

Bidding on eBay has become a science.  Bidding intelligently can be the difference between winning a prized auction and letting it go to some other clown.

There are basically three types of bidders on Ebay.
  • Those looking for the lowest price.
  • Those looking for an item and willing to pay anything reasonable to get it.
  • Those on a budget but who really want the item they are bidding on.
Once you've decided which type of bidder you are, you can set up your strategy in a way that works with your buying goals.
Lowest Price Strategy People who are looking for the lowest price on an item will find holding off to bid until the last moment will work best for them. This may not be the most popular practice but it is done regularly as a way to keep the price of an item down until the last minute than snatching it at a good price.
Willing to Pay Strategy Those looking for an item and willing to pay any reasonable amount for it will do best if they start off with a relatively high bid and maintain that position throughout the auction.

Pre-determined Limit Stragety People will determine how much they are willing to spend for something and not exceed it regardless if it means losing the auction. A good strategy here is to go in with a bid on the high side and continue to counterbid until you reach your limit.
Deceptive Bidding to Watch Out For Shill bidding is when a seller sets up fraudulent bidding. This is done using an alternative registration themselves or having an associate working with them, bidding on the item to inflate the price. This is also known as bid rigging and collusion. Usually the bidder that has not set a predetermined limit to what they are willing to pay will be most likely to fall victim to shilling.
How To Place Your Bid Proxy Bidding Okay, you've found what you want and you have decided the maximum amount you are willing to pay for it. Let's say you are willing to pay $30.00 and the current bid price is at $3.00. You enter your maximum bid (the most you are willing to pay for the item) and eBay will automatically place your bids for you through out the auction.
This is done through preset automatic increments which will increase as the highest bid on the item increases.
Basic Example of the Bidding Process
  • You've found an item you want to bid on.
  • You've determined you are willing to pay $30.00 for it.
  • The mininum bid on that item is $15.00
  • You enter your maximum of $30.00
  • If there are no other bids on the item the proxy server will enter your bid at the minimum of $15.00.
  • If someone bids $20.00 on it, the proxy server will automatically increase your bid to $21.00. That is what it is currently bidding for plus the minimum increment.
  • eBay then informs the other bidder that they have been outbid.
  • This bidding process continues throughout the duration of the auction, or until your maximum is met whichever comes first.
If someone joins the auction with a maximum bid of $35.00, you will be informed that you have been outbid.
Bidding Tip Your maximum bid has nothing to do with the minimum bid increment. That only applies to the current high bid.

Example -
  • Your maximum bid is $30.00
  • The minimum increment bid is $1.00
  • The current high bid is $16.00
  • To beat the current bid another bidder would have to bid at least $17.00.
Now here is where it gets tricky. Let's say that bidder decided to put his maximum bid $30.01.What happens? You lose the auction by a penny!
That is why it is a good idea not to put your maximum bid in at a predictable amount. If your maximum bid is $30 you would want to put it in as $30.63 or some off number. Many eBay auctions have been lost by a dime, nickle or penny.
What can You do About Snipers? Snipers wait until the very last possible minute to outbid an auction. It is legal but to many, considered annoying and rude.
  • 1. Becoming one yourself which takes many hours of watching auctions.
  • 2. Put your maximum amount in plus a little more. If you have decided that you are willing to pay $30.00, do not put your maximum in at $20.00. Go ahead and put in at $33.00 just for safety reasons. If you win, great! If it a sniper gets it, well, just chaulk it up to "you win some, you lose some" and leave smiling.

Being Happy: 19 Ways to Be and Stay Happy

Being happy is sometimes easier said than done.  Here are 19 ways to make sure you stay as happy as possible.

State of Mind

Happiness is ephemeral, subject to the vagaries of everything from the weather to the size of your bank account.

We're not suggesting that you can reach a permanent state called "happiness" and remain there. But there are many ways to swerve off the path of anxiety, anger, frustration, and sadness into a state of happiness once or even several times throughout the day. Here are 20 ideas to get you started. Choose the ones that work for you. If tuning out the news or making lists will serve only to stress you further, try another approach.

1. Practice mindfulness. Be in the moment. Instead of worrying about your checkup tomorrow while you have dinner with your family, focus on the here and now -- the food, the company, the conversation.

2. Laugh out loud. Just anticipating a happy, funny event can raise levels of endorphins and other pleasure-inducing hormones and lower production of stress hormones. Researchers at the University of California, Irvine, tested 16 men who all agreed they thought a certain videotape was funny. Half were told three days in advance they would watch it. They started experiencing biological changes right away. When they actually watched the video, their levels of stress hormones dropped significantly, while their endorphin levels rose 27 percent and their growth hormone levels (indicating benefit to the immune system) rose 87 percent.

3. Go to sleep. We have become a nation of sleep-deprived citizens. Taking a daily nap or getting into bed at 8 p.m. one night with a good book -- and turning the light out an hour later -- can do more for your mood and outlook on life than any number of bubble baths or massages.

4. Hum along. Music soothes more than the savage beast. Studies find music activates parts of the brain that produce happiness -- the same parts activated by food or sex. It's also relaxing. In one study older adults who listened to their choice of music during outpatient eye surgery had significantly lower heart rates, blood pressure, and cardiac workload (that is, their heart didn't have to work as hard) as those who had silent surgery.

5. Declutter. It's nearly impossible to meditate, breathe deeply, or simply relax when every surface is covered with papers and bills and magazines, your cabinets bulge, and you haven't balanced your checkbook in six months. Plus, the repetitive nature of certain cleaning tasks -- such as sweeping, wiping, and scrubbing -- can be meditative in and of itself if you focus on what you're doing.

Block and Focus

6. Just say no. Eliminate activities that aren't necessary and that you don't enjoy. If there are enough people already to handle the church bazaar and you're feeling stressed by the thought of running the committee for yet another year, step down and let someone else handle things.

7. Make a list. There's nothing like writing down your tasks to help you organize your thoughts and calm your anxiety. Checking off each item provides a great sense of fulfillment.

8. Do one thing at a time. Edward Suarez, Ph.D., associate professor of medical psychology at Duke, found that people who multitask are more likely to have high blood pressure. Take that finding to heart. Instead of talking on the phone while you fold laundry or clean the kitchen, sit down in a comfortable chair and turn your entire attention over to the conversation. Instead of checking e-mail as you work on other projects, turn off your e-mail function until you finish the report you're writing. This is similar to the concept of mindfulness.

9. Garden. Not only will the fresh air and exercise provide their own stress reduction and feeling of well-being, but the sense of accomplishment that comes from clearing a weedy patch, watching seeds turn into flowers, or pruning out dead wood will last for hours, if not days.

10. Tune out the news. For one week go without reading the newspaper, watching the news, or scanning the headlines online. Instead, take a vacation from the misery we're exposed to every day via the media and use that time for a walk, a meditation session, or to write in your journal.

11. Take a dog for a walk. There are numerous studies that attest to the stress-relieving benefits of pets. In one analysis researchers evaluated the heart health of 240 couples, half of whom owned a pet. Those couples with pets had significantly lower heart rates and blood pressure levels when exposed to stressors than the couples who did not have pets. In fact, the pets worked even better at buffering stress than the spouses did.

12. Scent the air. Research finds that the benefits of aromatherapy in relieving stress are real. In one study people exposed to rosemary had lower anxiety levels, increased alertness, and performed math computations faster. Adults exposed to lavender showed an increase in the type of brain waves that suggest increased relaxation. Today you have a variety of room-scenting methods, from plug-in air fresheners to essential oil diffusers, potpourri, and scented candles.

13. Ignore the stock market. Simply getting your quarterly 401(k) statement can be enough to send your blood pressure skyrocketing. In fact, Chinese researchers found a direct link between the daily performance of the stock market and the mental health of those who closely followed it. Astute investors know that time heals most financial wounds, so give your investments time -- and give yourself a break.

14. Visit a quiet place. Libraries, museums, gardens, and places of worship provide islands of peace and calm in today's frantic world. Find a quiet place near your house and make it your secret getaway.

15. Volunteer. Helping others enables you to put your own problems into perspective and also provides social interaction. While happy people are more likely to help others, helping others increases your happiness. One study found that volunteer work enhanced all six aspects of well-being: happiness, life satisfaction, self-esteem, sense of control over life, physical health, and depression.

16. Spend time alone. Although relationships are one of the best antidotes to stress, sometimes you need time alone to recharge and reflect. Take yourself out to lunch or to a movie, or simply spend an afternoon reading, browsing in a bookstore, or antiquing.

17. Walk mindfully. You probably already know that exercise is better than tranquilizers for relieving anxiety and stress. But what you do with your mind while you're walking can make your walk even more beneficial. In a study called the Ruth Stricker Mind/Body Study, researchers divided 135 people into five groups of walkers for 16 weeks. Group one walked briskly, group two at a slow pace, and group three at a slow pace while practicing "mindfulness," a mental technique to bring about the relaxation response, a physiological response in which the heart rate slows and blood pressure drops. This group was asked to pay attention to their footsteps, counting one, two, one, two, and to visualize the numbers in their mind. Group four practiced a form of tai chi, and group five served as the control, changing nothing about their lives. The group practicing mindfulness showed significant declines in anxiety and had fewer negative and more positive feelings about themselves. Overall they experienced the same stress-reducing effects of the brisk walkers. Better yet, the effects were evident immediately.

18. Give priority to close relationships. One study of more than 1,300 men and women of various ages found that those who had a lot of supportive friends were much more likely to have healthier blood pressure, cholesterol levels, blood sugar metabolism, and stress hormone levels than those with two or fewer close friends. Women, and to a lesser extent men, also seemed to benefit from good relationships with their parents and spouses. Studies also find that people who feel lonely, depressed, and isolated are three to five times more likely to get sick and die prematurely than those who have feelings of love, connection, and community.

19. Take care of the soul. In study after study, actively religious people are happier and cope better with crises, according to David Myers, Ph.D., a professor of psychology at Hope College in Holland, Michigan. For many people faith provides a support community, a sense of life's meaning, feelings of ultimate acceptance, a reason to focus beyond yourself, and a timeless perspective on life's woes. Even if you're not religious, a strong spirituality may offer similar benefits.
